MonaCoin is Japan's first cryptocurrency, created in December 2013, with the famous ASCII art "mona" as its motif. It is a fully decentralized payment system maintained by programs running on each user's PC, and not controlled by any central authority. While cryptocurrencies are often associated with speculation, MonaCoin has developed a community-driven approach with unique use cases such as building shrines and wordplay tipping. MonaCoin uses the Lyra2RE(v2) algorithm, has a block time of 1.5 minutes, and a block reward of 12.5 MONA. The total number of coins is 105,120,000, with the subsidy halving every 1051k blocks (~3 years). Difficulty re-targeting occurs every block using Dark Gravity Wave v3, and it was not premined.
